Modern Psychology has been built for those who have power and privilege.

This field created the language, tools, and practices to individualize problems that are social in nature. This individualistic approach perpetuates oppression in certain groups.

Those groups being black and brown-identifying peoples. CBT is often suggested for BIPOC persons because it involves reprogramming thought patterns. So, what’s wrong with that?

Well, when CBT is applied to BIPOC persons, it is essentially forcing them to think their way out of racism–which is not their responsibility. Experiencing racism is traumatic for BIPOC communities CBT just does not address trauma in the ways it needs to.

In my next video I will discuss therapy alternatives for people of color.

What does it mean to decolonize therapy? Based on my research, decolonizing therapy involves looking at how the mental health industrial complex continues to inflict a lot of harm on people because it chooses to remain apolitical.

Hi everyone! I've never actually introduced myself.

I'm Sarah Potter, I speak on how social media affects our mental health on my podcast, Social Media Therapy, and I am also a marketing consultant with my business, Mother of Marketing. I've been in marketing for going on 12 years and am proficient in product marketing, social marketing, digital ads, and overall marketing strategy development and execution.

Some fun facts, I'm a mom of three (8 months, 8 yrs, 9 yrs), abuse survivor, mental health influencer, ADHD woman, and mother of an autistic boy (who is the sweetest). I divorced my abuser coming up on 9 years ago, and have since remarried and found out what a partner actually is.

I love mentoring newbies in the world of social media and marketing and am a data and numbers driven person. My podcast originally started out as a way to help social media managers handle their mental health and has transitioned into helping the world understand what social media is doing to our brains.

My whole 30(ish) fruit cookie.

Something I do that’s great for my mental health on the weekends is come up with desserts or try out new dessert recipes because @csaffitz has me addicted to perfecting my technique.

This cookie is fussy. The dough was easy. I decided to get fussy with the fruit because I wanted to pour intention into practicing fruit cuts and placement. I’m a trained artist so this allowed me to be a little geometric with the design.

I get really wrapped up in the process and making stuff, be it a meal, a kid craft, or dessert. My ADHD super power of hyper fixating really empowers me to throw myself into the process (which often feels like a science experiment).

On the days where I’m really struggling, and I mean REALLY struggling, each of these family members of mine really shows up for me.

If I’m in bed for the day, Ted runs the household-no questions asked, no complaints.

If I’m being super triggered Fox comforts me by reading a book and giving me endless hugs.

If I’m sick to my stomach Arya brings me water and crackers and helps Ted with the baby.

Finn just know a when I need support most and is by my side the entire day.

As someone who is chronically ill, it can be difficult for everyone and I get that. It’s so hard to deal with the guilt and grief after a long sick day. I’m actively working toward better health everyday, it is hard though.

Spoonies understand this and I’m so great full to @faithfulwithafew introducing me to the spoonie mentality.

Things people with Bipolar I want you to understand

No two people experience bipolar disorder in the exact same way

We can’t just snap out of a mood swing

Bipolar doesn’t just go away. We learn to manage it over the course of our life.

We’re not crazy, or dangerous. We’re perfectly normal in a lot of ways.

Bipolar and Schizophrenia are not the same thing.

We can’t “just go do X and you’ll feel better.” That’s not how bipolar works.

Manic episodes don’t mean we’re going insane. Mania is having high energy levels, reduced need for sleep, euphoria, etc.

We lead normal, happy lives, as long as we’re managing our disease and getting support from our environment.

Being diagnosed with ADHD in the summer of 2021 has really opened my eyes to so many things. ⁠

Things like - my personality “quirks” are ADHD quirks. My brain is also wired differently and it has always been that way. I’m depressed because my ADHD was unaddressed (and now that’s changing). Procrastinating is a coping mechanism for my high-functioning anxiety (also gifted to me by undiagnosed ADHD). It’s okay for me to unmask and show my true energy levels. I actually don’t like being in chaos. ⁠

Going to an influencer event raises red flags for myself. It makes me feel like an imposter.

But I do it any way and it push myself to make connections.

I could admit I talked too much or I wasn’t cool enough, or that having my baby with me made it hard and isolating.

But, I still went. I pushed those things aside and was present AF. That is an accomplishment for this highly anxious woman.

Things people with depression want you to know

1. We’re always faking our contentment (and are tired of it)
2. We’re tired of proving we’re depressed and shouldn’t have to be suicidal to prove otherwise
3. A good day means we were able to get out of bed and brush our teeth – and yes, do other things.
4. Bad days are incredibly unbearable (I, for one, binge eat or starve)
5. We’re constantly burnt out on work, life, friends, family (but are still able to manage living)
6. We feel isolated and paralyzed to reach out. Reach out to us please.

I once had a friend who posted on Facebook, “Facebook isn’t the place to talk about how depressed you are. Stop whining and get over yourself.”

I mean…😳😳😳

That comment did not age well. And also, imagine the harm and damage done to people who are genuinely struggling.

People with depression have a very hard life and are doing everything they can to just make it through. Give someone you know with depression a hug, a cookie, and reminder that you’re always there for them-in good and bad times. Those who have mental health conditions are truly suffering inside at times and just need to be shown compassion.

You know Fox is autistic and I’m ADHD. Dax has a 20% chance of also being autistic-but we won’t know for at least a year (if we’re lucky). Being the parent of a special needs kiddo is so difficult. My own identity can often get so wrapped up in being a SPED parent that I often forget I am more than this. ALSO that I, like all other SPED parents need allies in our life.

It’s not just about having friends and family that are allies, it’s the entire public.

3.5 million Americans have an ASD diagnosis and even more Americans don’t understand how to ally with SPED kids’ parents or even just how to interact with autistics. In business, I’ve had business owners tout how great they are for hiring an “autistic person” as if it makes them better than everyone else. Like…cringe, no…

Autistic kids and adults wanted to be treated like humans, not tokens to feel better about ourselves. Parents also wanted to be treated with kindness and respect when we’re living our normal lives with our special kids.

So I created this diagram to help neurotypicals understand how to show parents like me you’re with us-that you’re here to stand by us as we raise these incredible kids.

Figured I’d share Halloween.

Finally went to @schnepffarms for the pumpkin patch and carnival. We chose the last day of the month and there were very little pumpkins left but also not a lot of people there. The social distancing was pretty great and so we’re the corn dogs.

My little bee and Arya had fun on all the rides and Dax did pretty dang good the whole time we were there.

earlier this week on the podcast in my episode with Michelle we talked specifically about social media breaks. I’m really happy to say that Saturday and Sunday I took a break from social media I didn’t worry about any of it. Social media breaks don’t have to be for months at a time or even weeks at a time. They can be just a few days. Taking time to decompress and spend time with actual humans in real life can be really great.

Taking a break from social media is a really great idea especially if your mental health is suffering lately. With the holidays coming up and stress probably going to be at max level for a lot of people take this time to plan out your social media break.

Questions I’ve been asking myself this week…

What are some things you wished had no implications?

Are you aware of what effects an emotionally traumatic event may have on the body or mind?

What is the bravest thing you’ve done for yourself?

For me, I find that last question important because the bravest thing I ever did was leave my abuser. You all know how frequently I talk about abuse and trauma and healing, right?

I’ve had some people look at these conversations I post online and ask me why I am so fixated on my victim hood and how I victimize myself…😆😒🙄.

I’ll get back to the victim thing in a moment but first here’s a stat: 70% of women who leave their abusers are murdered when they leave. This is applicable to any type of abuse-not just physical.

So for me, I find it offensive and damaging to tell survivors of abuse that their choice to talk about the abuse they experienced, share knowledge they now have about abuse, and share their recovery from traumatic experiences is “victimizing” themselves or not moving on.

We all choose to process and heal in our own ways and we need to respect each other’s journey.

These cards take me deeper than just a surface level question or answer, they lead me down a path of more questions, finding deeper meaning, and/or uncovering problem areas.

So, this morning I had a really intense therapy session. But I didn’t wanna go too far deep down the depression part because I wanted to ensure I would be able to function and work the rest of the day and be available for the new nanny.

With most of the day done, I have been able to draw a few cards from this deck and ask myself important questions I did not have the opportunity to ask myself during therapy this morning.

The amount of self-awareness and understanding I have generated for my own self regarding why I have been feeling angry and depressed over the last few days has really helped clear my head and get me back to functioning positively.

i’ve been utilizing these cars over the last few days and have been able to generate a certain level of self-awareness and understanding that I don’t normally give myself the time to do. This is mainly because I just don’t know what questions to ask myself. This deck of cards does the hard work for me.

From Rachel: “So I feel like a lot of not a lot, but some of what I do is educate people on why marketing and operations are different things. And you do want different people doing those things. Because, well, I feel like I am a creative left brained person, I am not a marketing strategist, and I am not, you do not want to let me loose in your Canva account.

It's not pretty. And so when I first started out, I would get so frustrated during my own marketing, because I just felt like, I have this very clear vision in my head.

But I was having trouble articulating it and making my graphics and like making it all work and match and like attracting the right person. And because I was spending so much of my energy thinking about my marketing, I wasn't able to spend my energy thinking about like getting clarity on who I'm supposed to even be talking to. And I think anyone who's in marketing or just business in general knows if you're talking to everybody, you're talking to nobody.

Yeah, the first thing the very first role I outsource in my business was marketing. And I have an amazing marketing strategist now who helps keep me on the straight and narrow I still I'm slowly frying my cold dead fingers off of coffee. But the rest of it the graphics, you know, when when to pose the reading your content pillars and hashtags.

Like, my brain doesn't do that. And so yeah, I think it's amazing those of you that do marketing and can do all of that. It's just, it was overwhelming. And I and I started to really resent Instagram as a platform just in general.”

The other day on the clock app, I heard an audio on how we cling to certain things in our post-trauma life. These things can be creature comforts, books, characters, makeup, dress up, etc.

The list honestly goes on! There is so much out there in the world people with trauma cling to so they can feel better. For me, I had lost all sense of self, my personality was gone, my inner strength was taken from me…

I tried so hard to find ways to bolster myself, to reignite the passion within me. It wasn’t until Daenerys Targaryen began to come into her own, post her own trauma, that I began to cling to her.

I saw in her some semblance of my own self that I wanted to become. Her strength, resilience, love, compassion, empathy, vengeance… all of it I wanted or myself.

That’s what I had–faith in myself, never letting go in an unrelenting world where I was abused and taken advantage of time and time again.

When I started cosplaying as Daenerys I really felt her power. I began to embody that power and exude that inner strength wherever I can. Her story is similar to mine. It might be similar to yours.

Whether you think she was a villain or not doesn’t matter. Who she was in her core, does. I love Daenerys, she helped me come back into my own and I’ll always remember her the way she was in season 7…not 8 🤣.

So how do you heal these things?

You begin reshaping the traumatized pathways in your mind. You recognize when you’re feeling triggered and you begin incorporating self soothing techniques.

These techniques could be…

- Validate how you feel
- Give yourself some grace to feel into your trigger
- Take a step back and do something else
- Meditate
- Take deep breaths
- Lay down and take a nap
- Tune out and tune into your favorite show
- Listen to your favorite songs
