EP01 – Toxic positivity – Wtf it is and Why it Needs to Stop

Episode 01 of Social Media Therapy covers the wide array of psychological impact that stems from toxic positivity.. From relationship dynamics, to the comparison game and then to the psycho influencer that shouts “POSITIVE VIBES ONLY” at the top of her lungs so loud that it penetrates your soul and makes you afraid to frown ever again. Listen, all we are saying is that emotions are normal, you’re allowed to feel things that are negative, and you’re allowed to talk about it online. Get ready to be therapized about all things social media!

If you struggle with being on social media because of the dark feelings it brings you, THIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU! We are all learning to navigate the digital world while simultaneously navigating what it means to stop comparing ourselves to others, manage our real-life stress and make everything else kind of enjoyable. Toxic positivity shows up on our feeds by people who make us believe that everything is always unicorns and rainbows and makes us feel like the 35 minute cry session we had in our closet with a candy bar, is not normal.

While we aren’t licensed therapists, in this episode you will find lots of ways that we (as digital marketer agency owners) have learned to pivot and retrain our brains to create better balance in our lives on and offline and of course, quit the toxic positivity train in its tracks.

Show up every week for Social Media Therapy, we will walk you through so much of what we see and assure that you’re not alone in this sometimes disgustingly-positive-not-allowed-to-frown world.

Things we learned while recording this episode:

Always allot more time for podcast recording.

Chasing happiness online will cause stress responses in your body.

Burnout is caused by you trying to be positive all the time.

Key takeaways for listeners:

Pretending everything is ok doesn’t solve real life problems.

You can feel your emotions, in fact, that’s healthy for you!

Comparisionitis is real, and needs to stop.
